Ramapo town officials say construction on a new minor league baseball stadium is on track and opening day should come this summer.
Town Supervisor Christopher St. Lawrence says 280 union builders are rushing to complete the 4,500-seat stadium. He says the roof is finished, the concourse has been poured and the project should be completed by the first week of June.
Opponents of the controversial project say construction could be halted at any moment, however. Preserve Ramapo, a group that opposes the stadium, says it plans to ask for a court-ordered injunction this week to stop the project in its tracks.
Preserve Ramapo's leader says that while St. Lawrence claims a local development corporation is picking up the $20 million tab, taxpayers could still foot the bill for some infrastructure expenses and cost overruns.
Ramapo voters have previously defeated a referendum for the town to guarantee $16.5 million in bonds for the stadium's construction.
And there are more hurdles. Officials from the Department of Environmental Conservation say they're considering fining Ramapo for erosion problems and water runoff that could potentially contaminate nearby wetlands.
The DEC recently lifted a stop-work order after making some changes to the plans.
