Middletown's deputy public works commissioner was arrested Tuesday night and charged with felony driving while intoxicated after an accident involving a city-owned Middletown vehicle. Phil Pingotti was also charged with leaving the scene of a property damage accident. Mount Hope police say they received a call Tuesday night about an accident on Kelly Hill Road and arrived at the scene to find no driver in the vehicle. The car had struck a telephone pole, knocking down electrical wires near the vehicle. Lt. Angelo Vellake said Pignotti could have been electrocuted.Officers say they went to Pingotti's home and arrested him after they determined he was the driver. He was also charged with other vehicle infractions including driving at an unreasonable speed in Tuesday's weather conditions. Pingotti was arraigned in town court and released after posting $500 bail. Middletown Mayor Marlinda Duncanson said she was still investigating the incident and did not determine yet what actions the city will take.
