Authorities in Orange County say a retired NYPD officer shot and killed his wife before turning the gun on himself Tuesday.

Police say the couple?s 13-year-old and 11-year-old sons made the grisly discovery in Wallkill after returning home from school and called 911. Investigators say 44-year-old Peter Heiberger shot his wife, 32-year-old Elena, twice in the head with a handgun he owned, then shot himself in the head. The NYPD says Heiberger retired in February after 20 years on the job. The couple had four children, three boys under the age of 13 and a 5-year-old girl.

Police officials say officers had been called to the Heiberger home on several occasions but say none of those calls were related to domestic abuse. Recent published reports say Elena Heiberger wanted a separation, possibly seeking a divorce from her husband.
