A new report is shedding light on the dangers of a stretch of road in Mamaroneck where a 6-year-old boy and his mom were killed last month. It happened at the corner of Mamaroneck Avenue and New Street as the two were walking to school on June 20.
New data from a traffic consultant shows there are about 41 crashes a year on Mamaroneck Avenue between Grand Street and Andrews Street. That's three times the statewide average. That portion of road in the study is less than a half mile long.
Back in June, 6-year-old Michael and his mom Molly Murphy Donovan were crossing the street when they were hit and killed by a smaller school bus. Police said they were using the crosswalk and they did have a walk sign. The driver of the school bus had a green light to turn, according to police.
Since that accident, dozens of families in the community say they have been fighting for enhanced safety measures on this street. It is under the jurisdiction of Westchester County.
Village and county leaders tell News 12, they are looking into both short and long-term initiatives to make the road safer, especially by the schools.
However, dozens of families say the clock is ticking. They want to see changes made as soon as possible before the start of the next school year.
A meeting between the county and village to talk about what's next with a safety plan is scheduled for July 15.
