Utility crews worked all day Thursday to restore power to Yorktown customers who were left in the dark following Wednesday night's storm that caused damage throughout the Hudson Valley.

Town Supervisor Ed Lachterman said at one point more than 2,000 people were left in the dark primarily due to branches taking out power lines and transformers popping.

"You're fighting Mother Nature and she's not a lightweight," he said.

Neighbors on Willoway Street, which had a 30+ foot pine branch blocking part of the residential road, described the storm as violent.

"There was a huge bang when the tree came down and then when the transformers went they all started exploding," Yorktown resident Les Weinman said.

Former town Councilman Vishnu Patel also lives on Willoway.

"It was so bad, very immense you know, storm in a very short time," Patel said.

Lachterman said he was optimistic everything would be back online by Thursday night but added the town was prepared to distribute water and dry ice starting Friday if outages lingered.
