Crews worked throughout the day Wednesday in Suffern as part of a massive cleanup to haul debris out of the Ramapo River.

The cleanup effort comes after the 43-year-old driver of a tractor-trailer that was transporting garbage went off an overpass Tuesday on I-87 and plummeted 40 feet into the Ramapo River. The driver was killed in the accident.

The Ramapo River supplies drinking water to 12,000 Suffern residents, but Mayor John Keegan says village wells were shut down immediately after the accident.

The village has hired United Water for its supply until the river is cleaned up.
