Cyclists pedal 105 miles for ‘Forgotten Children of Haiti’

A determined group of cyclists is hitting the trail on a 105-mile roundtrip from Somers to Battery Park in Manhattan – all for a cause close to their hearts.
The “Pedal for Purpose” event kicked off on the Empire State Trail despite heavy rain and chilly temperatures. For these riders, no weather could dampen their mission to raise money for Forgotten Children of Haiti, an organization providing food, shelter, health care and education to children in need.
This marks the first year for the event, but the motivation behind it runs deep. Organizer Michael Esposito grew up volunteering for Forgotten Children of Haiti, which was founded by his parents. Now, he’s leading the charge and the ride, with his family set to meet him at Battery Park to help refuel him for the journey back north.
“We made a promise to the families in Haiti,” Esposito said. “It’s raining, it’s cold, but we’re riding with gratitude – gratitude for the opportunity to ride on this amazing trail, to raise awareness and funds for people who are struggling.”
The goal is to raise $30,000, but with just under $10,000 raised so far, the team is calling on the community for support. Donations will remain open through the end of June, and event organizers are also looking for new riders to join next year’s effort.
