The illegal immigrant accused of the rape and murder of a woman inside her New City home testified Tuesday that he doesn?t remember much about the day of the murder.Ronald Douglas Herrera-Castellanos, 30, is on trial for raping, stabbing and strangling Mary Nagle to death while doing work at her home last April. Herrera testified that he only remembers waking up next to Nagle?s mutilated, bloody body that day. Herrera said that on the night before the murder, he was drinking, using cocaine and visiting a prostitute. He arrived the next day at Nagle?s home to powerwash the deck. Herrera told the jury that when he woke up, Nagle was dead and his right leg was over her naked body and his clothes were soaked with blood.
Herrera acknowledged swapping his blood-soaked clothes for a pair of shorts and a T-shirt belonging to Nagle?s husband. And he admitted that he lied to police about ever being in the Nagle?s home. Herrera is charged with first and second-degree murder, rape and other crimes. He could face life in prison without parole if convicted.
