Police say one person was killed in a single-car crash early Tuesday morning in Greenburgh.
It happened around 1:20 a.m. on Route 119 in front of the Crossroad Shopping Center that has a BJ's Wholesale Club, DSW and Home Goods.
A gray Hyundai Elantra traveling eastbound left the roadway, smashed into a tree, and rolled over into a concrete stormwater channel, killing the female driver.
Crews climbed down into the drainage ditch to carefully remove the woman. A crane was then used to lift the car out of the ditch and onto a flatbed truck.
Investigators have not released any other details regarding how she lost control of her vehicle.
Route 119 was closed in both directions between Yosemite and Manhattan avenues for hours overnight.
As traffic began to build, officers diverted drivers through the shopping center as crews worked to get the damaged car onto a flatbed truck and towed away.
While the investigation continued, police opened the westbound lanes and traffic flowed in both directions. By 11 a.m., the road was finally fully reopened.
Coworkers Steve Bowers and Daniel Evans had driven by the accident scene earlier and came back to try and find out what happened.
"Very sad. Whether they were going to work, coming from work, didn't make it home. Sad,” said Bowers.
"I think they should put in a guardrail,” said Evans.
Anyone who may have witnessed the accident is asked to contact the Greenburgh Police Department at 914-989-1700.
