A dairy truck driver was killed Wednesday when his vehicle slammed into an overpass on the New York State Thruway in Suffern.

According to police, the driver of the Byrne Dairy truck apparently struck the guardrail first before smashing into the Hemion Road overpass around 2:30 p.m. Police say the impact was so severe, the front cab of the truck was crushed and the driver was killed instantly.

Traffic on both sides of the Thruway came to a standstill as investigators tried to piece together exactly what happened. Early reports indicate the driver may have been on his cell phone at the time of impact.
