Thousands of Dutchess County residents are recovering from Saturday's storms that took down trees and power lines and left many without power.
The power is back on for almost everyone on Church Street in Poughkeepsie. Central Hudson Gas & Electric Corporation crews moved quickly to restore power - a relief for neighbors in the area.
Central Hudson had about 4,000 Dutchess County customers without power Sunday morning. By the afternoon, that number improved, and 1,000 customers were without power.
Sharon Cherry says she and her granddaughter were just having a Saturday night inside their home on Allen Place when the storm blew through. Cherry said she saw a tree get uprooted and it hit power lines. She also said she saw wires get yanked out of the house next door.
"I screamed. Then she came in and said, 'What's going on, grandma? What's going on, Nana?!' I said, 'a tree just fell,’” Cherry recalled.
Patricia Willis and her next-door neighbor Denise Garrett said despite being without power, they are glad their homes weren't damaged.
Willis described the storms and said, "A lot of hail. Crack. Boom. Bang.”
News 12 reached out to several local police departments. There are no reports of any major injuries or property damage. However, the vacant home next to Cherry's house was a bit torn up.
Some customers who've been without power for an extended time might be eligible to get reimbursed for spoiled food and medicine. Call or visit the Central-Hudson website to see if you qualify.
