A deadly shooting in Bridgeport has become the city’s sixth homicide of the year, according to police.

Bridgeport police say 46-year-old Johnny Nesmith was shot and killed early Sunday morning outside the P.T. Barnum apartment complex.

The shooting happened around 1 a.m. outside Building 21.

Police say Nesmith’s listed address was in Hamden, though he had also lived in Bridgeport.

Investigators say a community reunion had been held in the neighborhood earlier in the day and believe there were likely witnesses nearby when the shooting occurred.

“We know this was traumatizing, and we know that it’s difficult to come forward, but this homicide took place right after this reunion, and we know there are people right next to Mr. Nesmith that know the person who shot him,” said Detective Jeffrey Holtz of the Bridgeport Police Department.

Police are urging anyone with information about the shooting to contact the Bridgeport Police Department.

The investigation remains ongoing.
