The East Ramapo School District is facing a significant financial challenge as it grapples with a projected $20 million deficit for the upcoming year, even if a budget with a nearly 5.4% tax increase is passed by the public.
A notable portion of the budget, $75 million, is allocated for transportation expenses, which accounts for 23%of the budget.
This is significantly higher than most other schools, which typically allot around 5% for transportation.
Community activist Terry Rodriguez expressed concern over the disproportionate amount allocated for transportation, describing it as "appalling" and calling for state intervention to address the issue by disbanding the current school board.
In response to the financial strain, school officials are exploring options to mitigate transportation costs. This includes renegotiating bus contracts and potentially increasing the mileage limit for students who live a certain distance from school.
