The Eastchester Police Department and community is remembering one of its own who died 29 years ago.
Michael Frey died in the line of duty in 1996 at 29 years old.
Frey was a police officer in Eastchester for six years.
He was shot and killed by a sniper’s bullet while responding to a call. Officials say he was shot before he could even exit his vehicle.
On Friday, dozens were at the town hall to remember and honor him. “It was one of those things that nothing of that magnitude had ever really happened in Eastchester," says Timothy Bonci, former Eastchester chief of police. “I was a lieutenant at the time that he was killed, and he worked on my squad," says Bonci. “The date always just sticks in my mind," says Michael Falotico, a friend of Frey. "I saw him actually that morning. We chatted out back about the weather," says Falotico. “It’s something that our community will never forget," says Eastchester Town Supervisor Anthony Colavita.
Eastchester officials say it’s important to keep his memory alive and remember the ultimate sacrifices police officers make for the communities they serve. “There’s very few officers that even worked with Michael that were on duty that day but the young officers that have come on the job, they really do keep his memory alive," says Bonci. "It’s important to keep remembering and bring other people in and tell the world what happened," says Colavita.
Police say after Frey was killed and his partner injured, the suspect barricaded himself in the home.
After several hours, police were able to enter and found the suspect dead from a self-inflicted wound.
