Republican Rockland County Executive Ed Day overcame Democratic and Conservative challengers to win his second term in office Tuesday.
He took 54 percent of the vote. Day's main challenger, Democrat Maureen Porette, garnered 43 percent. She is a Stony Point lawyer and political newcomer. Conservative party candidate Thomas Sullivan scored just 2 percent.
"We're gonna finish what we started," he told supporters after learning of his victory. "We're gonna have a fully reinvigorated economy."
Porette was accompanied by three of her eight children as she cast her vote Tuesday in Stony Point, while Day submitted his ballot in New City.
Confidence was clear from Day as he discussed his feelings coming into Election Day.
"I have a record of four years, it's indisputable, people have politicized it," Day said Tuesday. "But bottom line is yesterday we announced a $138 million deficit, bills that we had to pay back because of horrible management in county government, we'll have that at zero by the end of this year."
Nerves were more evident from Porette's camp.
"(I'm) nervous, anxious, excited," Porette said earlier in the day. "And just really want the whole day to be over with and get the results."
