Jordan Cutler, 36, of Ellenville, has entered a plea of not guilty by reason of insanity in the attempted murder of his mother last September.
According to the Ulster County District Attorney's Office, Cutler choked his mother and slashed her neck with a kitchen knife.
The incident occurred shortly after Mobile Mental Health responders visited and left the residence.
A hearing is scheduled for next month to determine whether Cutler suffers from a dangerous mental illness.
If found to have a dangerous mental illness, Cutler will be sent to a secure psychiatric facility for treatment.
