This week shines a critical spotlight on the Black maternal health crisis. The CDC reports that Black women are three times more likely than white women to die from pregnancy-related causes.

Westchester County is taking a stand with its Black Maternal Child Health Initiative. This vital program offers prenatal consultations, group prenatal sessions and postpartum support groups, empowering mothers with knowledge and care.

These services are delivered through the nonprofit Birth from the Earth, in partnership with local hospitals like St. John's Riverside Hospital.

Tragically, many of these deaths are preventable. By recognizing warning signs like severe headaches, extreme swelling, trouble breathing and bleeding, women and their families can seek potentially lifesaving medical attention.
