Check out this massive insect spotted by a viewer in Cornwall - who thought it looks like a "murder hornet."
Thankfully, that doesn't appear to be the case.
Experts at Cornell Cooperative Extension say "murder hornets" are not found along the East Coast of the United States.
UPDATE
The Cornell Cooperative Extension
says the insect appears to be Tremex columba, commonly known as
a Pigeon Tremex or Pigeon Horntail.
The website
Insect Identification says “the Pigeon Tremex is a
horntail and is not naturally aggressive, unlike wasps….This species is
commonly seen in hardwood forests and is a familiar sight to lumberjacks.”
A shoutout to News 12
Facebook readers Dylan Powell, Eric Lester and John Grant II who also
identified it correctly.
