Officials say Ladder Company 53 on City Island, which was supposed to close during evening hours due to budget cuts, may now be closed 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
According to FDNY Commissioner Nicholas Scoppetta, as of July 1, the ladder company will officially close due to an updated budget for 2010, which was released by Mayor Michael Bloomberg. The FDNY is responsible for cutting millions of dollars from its budget.
Ladder 53 has remained open during night hours despite the original plan to close because of an excess of firefighters on the city?s payroll. According to officials, there will be fewer firefighters after layoffs and retirements.
The FDNY says the ladder company could remain open if the city receives federal funds from Albany.
The closest firehouse to the City Island community is located in Co-op City.
