Inspectors from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) surveyed some of the areas in Westchester and Hudson Valley ravaged by the weekend nor'easter.
FEMA officials will determine if communities like Mamaroneck and New Rochelle qualify for federal disaster aid.
Meanwhile, volunteer agencies and groups met Thursday at the Mamaroneck Public Library to prepare to help those devastated by flooding from the nor?easter.
The major need currently is to provide housing, food and clothing to many who lost everything. Mamaroneck Village Manager Leonard Verrastro says there are about 700 homes and businesses that were flooded.
Cleanup efforts have been overwhelming for homeowners and businesses. Habitat for Humanity is pitching in to those most in need. The agency?s Jim Killoran says, ?We're going to help gutting homes. We've been able to clear out basements of flooded materials and debris working with the DPW and the whole team in Mamaroneck.?
There were some signs of progress in the village. The Mamaroneck Avenue School that had been closed for three days reopened Thursday.
