Fire departments are urging residents in the Hudson Valley to clear fire hydrants near their homes after Piermont firefighters found some buried under up to five feet of snow following the recent storm.
Members of several departments spent Monday night digging out hydrants themselves.
The Yorktown Heights Volunteer Fire Department shared video of firefighters clearing a hydrant, saying the work took about two and a half minutes.
Firefighters said a fire can double in size every 30 seconds, and blocked hydrants can slow their response during emergencies.
Residents are being asked to remove snow and ice directly from hydrants, then clear a three‑foot perimeter and a path to the street.
