Firefighters and police were on scene Saturday at the New Rochelle Harbor in response to an oil leak.
The responding parties received a call regarding an explosion that they initially thought was a water main break.
"We received a call actually for an explosion and liquid coming out of a manhole,” said New Rochelle Fire Chief Andrew Sandor.
He described it as “some kind a Con Ed oil.”
Sandor said that the oil doesn't appear to be hazardous or flammable but issues a warning to residents to be careful while walking and not to track the oil into their homes.
It wasn’t immediately clear what triggered the explosion.
