Flames destroyed a building and several businesses in Mount Vernon overnight.
Fire officials say they received a call around 12:12 a.m. and were on the scene at 24 Mount Vernon Ave. within four minutes. Everyone was evacuated before they arrived.
They say the flames spread quickly through the building, causing substantial damage. It will need to be demolished.
A second alarm was called, and firefighters from neighboring districts of Pelham, Eastchester, New Rochelle, White Plains and Yonkers helped in the fight. It was declared under control at 5:16 a.m.
No firefighters or civilians were injured.
The American Red Cross opened a shelter and reception center at the Doles Recreation Center today for those who need shelter and food.
