Eric Favors was a star athlete for North Rockland High School on the football team and track and field. Now, the 24-year-old is looking to shine even brighter on a world stage.

Favors has longed dreamed about competing in the Olympics. To help realize that, he decided a few years ago to get dual citizenship through his Irish-born grandmother. He then set the Irish national indoor shotput record.

He recently threw 64 feet 5 inches – 7 inches better than his record-setting throw. He says he needs to throw nearly 70 to qualify for the Olympics.

“I just have to trust in my coach, trust in my ability, and just compete,” Favors told News 12. 

His biggest support comes from his family. While his grandmother is not able to travel, his mom Teresa does her best to be by his side.

“He works hard for everything that he is doing…I know he's going to go far. How far? I'm not sure but I'm going to be right there beside him,” she said.

Eric has competed for Ireland in the World University Games and the European Team Championships, finishing both in the top 10. He will try to qualify for the Olympics in June.
