A former New York City corrections officer, Ghislaine Barrientos, who resides in Mount Vernon, has pleaded guilty to federal charges.

The U.S. Attorney's Office announced that the 37-year-old admitted to taking money to smuggle drugs into Rikers Island.

Barrientos was arrested last April after drug-sniffing dogs detected contraband on her while she was at work. A search revealed sheets of paper that tested positive for K-2, a synthetic cannabis, and nearly $2,500 in cash.

As a result of her guilty plea, Barrientos faces up to five years in prison when she is sentenced in April.
