Yonkers public schools are set to open for in-person learning on Monday, but that could all change on Friday.
Superintendent Dr. Edwin Quezada said the decision about whether or not to be remote will be based off the numbers - such as looking at the positivity rate and how staffing looks.
"The positivity rate is through the roof right now. You know, what we are seeing at our centers and what we are seeing with the data the mayor receives from Westchester County. So, I want our families to know that if we need to open schools using remote learning as a modality, we will try to make a decision by tomorrow so that everybody prepares," says Quezada.
Whatever the decision is, Quezada also said it would most likely affect the entire district.
The district began testing its students and employees for COVID-19 Wednesday.
Quezada says about 25% of the 800 people tested that first day came back positive.
Testing will be available on Sunday, Jan. 2 at the following locations:
• Eugenio Maria de Hostos MicroSociety School on Morris Street
• Roosevelt High School on Tuckahoe Road
• Gorton High School on Shonnard Place
Before holiday break, Mount Vernon announced students would start 2022 online until at least Jan. 18.
