Various programs are currently in place for homeless people in Westchester who are in need - to help prevent illness or death from frigid winter temperatures.
According to the National Health Care for the Homeless Council, while makeshift structures provide partial protection, people who use them for shelter are still at risk of hypothermia, frostbite, sunburn and heat exhaustion.
The YWCA of Yonkers is a warming shelter, open for homeless people who need help.
"We have a warming center, if anyone is out in the cold and they need a place for shelter," said director of programs, Juan Rogers.
The nonprofit additionally offers shelter and services for those in need, one being its Work Force Development Program.
"It's been helpful, very helpful because I essentially have nowhere to go so it's a god send," said Kimberly McBean, a member in the program.
For anyone looking to help out, the YWCA is always accepting resources such as brand new warm winter clothing and volunteers.
