A volunteer Fort Montgomery firefighter faces a slew of felony charges for allegedly stealing a former chief's truck while intoxicated.
Matthew J. Maass, 23, allegedly took the vehicle while intoxicated at approximately 1:35 a.m. Friday and crashed into a telephone pole. The pole was severed and fell into the intersection of Canterbury Road and Weyant Road.
The suspect already had a suspended license from a DWI conviction that was handed down last week. He now faces felony charges of DWI, felony driving with a suspended license, felony grand larceny, two counts of felony criminal mischief and misdemeanor unauthorized use of a vehicle.
Maass has been suspended by the department, which he has been with for less than a year. He is also a U.S. Marine on administrative leave and could possibly be discharged. He is currently unemployed.
Maass was arraigned Friday morning in Highlands Town Court and released on his own recognizance. He is due back in court on June 7.
Fire officials say the stolen truck is not being used by the current chief and is being utilized as a utility truck for the time being.
