The tax break was originally put in place in June, when prices skyrocketed over $5 a gallon. Without the tax suspension, prices are expected to increase 16 cents per gallon.
People who spoke with News 12 had mixed opinions about the gas tax holiday ending.
"Prices of gas throughout the world are being affected by the bottom line, which is the corporations,” said Jonathon, from Huntington. “The whole system has to be revamped. This isn’t working.”
"I was just getting back from LA before the holidays and there it’s close to $6 a gallon. I kind of feel like we're doing okay in New York,” said Scott, from Plainview.
According to AAA, the national average is $3.21 a gallon. In New York state, the average is $3.39. Westchester's average cost for a gallon of gasoline is higher than the national average at $3.57.
