Lynbrook police are warning residents about a distraction larceny scam.

The alert comes after a female pedestrian had jewelry stolen right off her neck while walking in the village.

The victim was on a side street around 4:30 p.m. on Monday when she was approached by two people in a white SUV, according to police.

The couple asked for directions to the nearest grocery store and while she was helping, the female passenger of the vehicle got out and put a ring on the resident’s finger and a necklace around her neck.

When the pedestrian became uncomfortable and started to walk away she realized that her 18-karat gold necklace with a diamond pendant had been taken off of her, police said.

This type of larceny is part of an ongoing distraction larceny pattern reported in Nassau County.

Officials are reminding residents to be careful when approached by strangers, even if they seem friendly, and take note of vehicle details and physical descriptions to alert police of any similar incidents.
