Gov. Kathy Hochul says her top priority coming into Albany is addressing the pandemic and getting control of the delta variant - and she's not going to take it easy on the unvaccinated.
Hochul made it loud and clear Tuesday that if you're not vaccinated for COVID-19, you will likely have to be, or you may find yourself extremely limited in what you can do.
"With the FDA's full approval of the Pfizer vaccine yesterday, New Yorkers can expect new vaccine requirements, and more on that soon," says Hochul.
The town of Greenburgh discussed a vaccine mandate of its own Tuesday.
Town Supervisor Paul Feiner would like to implement a vaccine mandate for all town employees, but members of the board want exceptions in place for people who can't be vaccinated, like weekly testing. How to handle that will be discussed in length at the next public meeting on Tuesday.
However, the town board is not ready to go there just yet for a couple of reasons.
"Those who are immune compromised, and they have doctors certification saying that they should not take the vaccine. Then there are those who choose not to take the vaccine. So I think that those are two different...two different groups," says Greenburgh Councilwoman Diana Juettner.
They will be discussing this in greater length next Tuesday.
Right now, city workers in Yonkers, New Rochelle and Mount Vernon, plus state employees and health care workers, all have to be vaccinated or tested weekly.
Whether the state takes it up a notch and gets rid of the testing option for certain people, will be up to the Legislature.
