Greenburgh town officials are intensifying efforts to enhance road safety following a series of accidents involving pedestrians, particularly on East Hartsdale Avenue.
At a special meeting Wednesday night, the Greenburgh Town Board unanimously approved a resolution urging New York state legislators to authorize red light cameras at two critical locations: East Hartsdale Avenue and Rockledge Road, and Ardsley Road and Old Army Road.
According to Greenburgh town officials, they lack the authority to install red light cameras without state permission, as current laws only permit cities, not towns, to do so. Therefore, they are submitting a home rule request for authorization.
This advocacy for enhanced road safety comes in the wake of a tragic hit-and-run incident on East Hartsdale Avenue last August, resulting in the death of former town official Stephanie Kavorious. Since then, the Greenburgh Town Board has escalated safety measures, utilizing a state grant to construct sidewalks, upgrade traffic signals, install speed bumps, and add more street lights.
Additionally, police patrols along East Hartsdale Avenue and other areas have been intensified, with five additional officers joining the department following the fatal hit-and-run.
The town now awaits state approval to proceed with the installation of red-light cameras.
