Election officials are getting closer to certifying the Nov. 7 general election race between incumbent Republican Town Supervisor Rich Dionisio and write-in challenger Ron Belmont.

Attorneys and elections officials continued recanvassing all 2,000 write-in votes in the race. Nearly all of them are for Belmont who launched a campaign six weeks before Election Day.

"What is obvious after seeing all of these ballots is that clear intent of the voters of Harrison was to elect Ron Belmont supervisor," said Adam Bradley, attorney for Ron Belmont.

Dionisio's team has spent hours challenging ballots with Belmont's name for various potential issues including misspellings and voters putting his name in the wrong box. Any challenged ballot will go before the judge overseeing this case for a final ruling on whether to award them to Belmont or disqualify them.

"We'll keep counting and it will be decided in court," said John Ciampoli, attorney for Rich Dionisio.

Belmont entered the week up one vote on Dionisio but the incumbent is likely to hold a temporary lead once the votes in question are removed from Belmont's total.

Both sides expect to finish recanvassing the write-in ballots by Wednesday evening.

The next court date on this case is still pending.
