More than 100 workers at a Haverstraw nursing home held a candlelight vigil Wednesday to protest the lack of a new contract.

Certified nursing assistants and housekeeping workers at the Northern Riverview Nursing Home have been without a contract for the past five years. Union leaders say new nursing assistants at the home earn about $10.60 an hour. They contend the salary is one of the lowest rates for nursing assistants in Rockland County and throughout the state. Workers say they have only received one raise in the past four years. Pay and pension are two of the big sticking points in negotiations. The workers say they also have problems with staffing because the nursing home can't recruit workers with the current salary structure.

Northern Riverview administrators say they are willing to meet with union leaders sometime next month.
