What you eat at restaurants in the Bronx and the rest of the city could be changed depending on how the city's health department votes Tuesday.City health officials will be voting on whether or not to ban the use of trans fats in restaurants across the city. The ban would be the first of its kind in the entire country.Trans fats are found in cooking oils and shortenings, and used at many restaurants to make foods such as French fries and doughnuts.Officials say the ban would prevent hundreds of deaths each year. They claim the ingredient can lead to serious health conditions such as heart disease. Many restaurant chains have cut back on the amount of trans fats in their foods, but say eliminating it totally could be costly and trickle down to the customer. Others also fear the deadline to get rid of trans fats is not realistic.
