City health officials are calling on the state legislature to pass a bill that would allow pharmacists to give people flu and pneumonia shots.
Officials say that this would make the vaccines more widely available. They estimate the number of senior citizens getting the shots would increase by 50,000 or more.
Officials say that emergency rooms get 1,000 flu-related visits each day. They also say that one-fifth of the city's vaccine supply is going unused.
The practice is not uncommon around the country. Forty-seven other states already allow pharmacists to give vaccinations.
