Here’s what you need to know:
  • A flood watch is in effect from 2 p.m. today through 8 a.m. Friday. Scattered to numerous instances of flash flooding are possible in the most flood-prone areas. Localized severe flooding may cause an elevated threat to life and property this afternoon through the night.
  • It's a warm and sticky start to the day under a partly sunny sky. Temperatures are in the upper-70s.
  • The heat wave is over and the focus shifts to the increased risk of flash flooding today through tomorrow morning. High temperatures nosedive by at least 10-15 degrees to the low 80s.
  • Slow moving thunderstorms arrive after 3 p.m. today through 9 a.m. Friday from northwest to southeast. The first communities impacted will be the northern Bronx - specifically Riverdale, Kingsbridge, Fieldston and Marble Hill extending to Norwood and Wakefield. Once these storms slowly spread across the borough, places like Williamsburg, Greenpoint, Park Slope through Crown Heights in Brooklyn will be the next areas of concern before the storms spread across the entire borough.
  • Torrential rain will bring dangerous travel conditions, especially during the evening across the city. Rain will become lighter and scattered by Friday morning, but there will be trouble spots for the morning commute due to residual flooding/ponding.
  • 1-2 inches of rainfall is expected through 9 a.m. Friday with locally higher amounts with any downpours.
  • Friday afternoon will be drier, cooler and windy. We could break a record coldest high temperature on Aug. 1. The record is 82 degrees setback in 1917, and we're forecasting a high of 71 degrees.
  • Below-normal temperatures takes us into the weekend with highs in the low-80s, low humidity and pleasant sunshine.
