Heavy rains cause flooding at farm in Pine Island
Heavy rains saturated soil and caused flooding at a farm in Pine Island.
Owners of the DeBuck?s Sod Farm have a pump running in an effort to dry out their fields. They say the diesel fuel powering the pumps is costing them a fortune, but as long as the rain continues to fall their options are fewer and fewer. Sod is a nursery crop that needs 12 to 18 months to bring to harvest. The seedlings put down in August are now underwater so their full impact won?t be known until next summer. The owners also say the sod that survived the extreme weather can?t be harvested because the tractors keep sinking in the wet fields.
