A nearly 300-year-old church in Setauket is seeking community support to fund a costly roof replacement that church leaders say is critical to preserving the historic building for future generations.

For nearly three centuries, Caroline Episcopal Church has stood overlooking Setauket's Village Green. Now, parish leaders say the historic structure faces a major challenge.

"We need a new roof. It's a cedar shake roof. We're in a historical district. It's a historical church, and it's roughly $130,000," said Bruce Cash, the church's rector's warden.

The expense is significant for the small north shore parish, which has launched a fundraising effort and is asking for donations to help cover the cost.

"We're not a huge congregation. We're hundreds of people, not thousands of people. So, we need support," said Kirk Cronk, of Port Jefferson.

Church leaders say the current roof has reached the end of its 30-year lifespan, and leaks have already begun appearing inside the building. The parish set up some trash cans to collect the water, but they say sometimes tarps are needed to protect the pews.

"A few little leaks here and there, but water finds the path of least resistance, so it will run around," Cash said.

Cronk said the situation could worsen if repairs are delayed.

"If it doesn't get fixed, it could crumble. It could cave in," he said.

Built in 1729, Caroline Episcopal Church is the second-oldest Episcopal church in the country. Because the church is located within Setauket's historic district, repairs must be completed using traditional materials, increasing the overall cost of the project.

Church officials also say there is uncertainty about what contractors may discover once work begins.

"We don't know what, once we take a roof up, what we're going to find," Cash said.

Beyond its religious role, church leaders say the building serves as an important community resource. The church operates a food pantry every Wednesday that supports 60 families. The property is also home to a music school and a history museum, located in the basement.

"I'm not asking you to support a religion. I'm asking you to support a community asset," Cronk said.

Church leaders say their goal is to preserve the Long Island landmark for generations to come.

"Another 300 years is our motto," Cash said.

The church hopes to replace the roof before winter. Those interested in contributing can find more information by clicking here.
