Hudson Valley leaders and environmental groups are claiming an environmental victory after Holtec decided to pause plans to release wastewater from decommissioning Indian Point.
News 12 reported last week that the company planned to move up its discharges into the Hudson River, but petitions circulated, politicians wrote letters, and counties voted to oppose the plans.
County executives from Westchester, Rockland, Ulster, Orange, Dutchess, and Putnam counties came together in Peekskill Monday to celebrate.
Holtec maintains its legally able to discharge the wastewater and has said before it isn't harmful, but it realizes there is public concern so it will pause to allow more time to talk to elected officials and others.
Going forward, the county executives want more transparency and dialogue about the plans.
They ask in the meantime that Holtec secures the discharge on site while evaluating safer methods to get rid of it.
