SPCA Westchester announced it is waiving adoption fees for all animals that have been in their care for 30 or more days through their program, 'Home for the Holidays.'
The promotion runs now through Dec. 31.
It applies to both cats and dogs.
Around half of the shelter's animals are eligible to get their adoption fees waived.
Lisa Bonanno, the director of development of the SPCA Westchester, said they've hosted this promotion in the past but stopped for a few years.
She said they decided to bring it back this year because adoptions are down at shelters nationwide.
"There was such a surge in adoptions and purchases during the pandemic. So, we're kind of seeing the effects of that-- which is so many amazing dogs and cats that were normally getting scooped up very quickly and getting adopted are now sitting here for weeks and months at a time."
If you're interested in bringing a pet home for the holidays, you're encouraged to visit the shelter and meet with an adoption counselor.
News 12 was told all the adoption policies and procedures remain the same to ensure that the parents and the pets are a good match.
