The Hudson Valley, home to tens of thousands of Haitians, is bracing for refugees who are fleeing their quake-ravaged homeland hoping to settle locally, bringing with them many children in need of schooling.
As of late Monday afternoon, more than two dozen Haitian refugee students signed up to enroll in East Ramapo schools. The superintendent says he expects many more in the coming weeks.
East Ramapo Superintendent Ira Outstatcher says he welcomes the students with open arms and says the district will do whatever it can to accommodate them.
