School leaders and police in the Hudson Valley are taking extra safety precautions following a deadly shooting at a Catholic school in Minneapolis.
Two children were killed and 17 others injured Wednesday morning when a 23-year-old gunman opened fire through the windows of a church during Mass.
While there are no reported threats locally, districts across Westchester and Rockland counties are stepping up security ahead of the new school year.
In Yonkers, the associate superintendent says all schools are equipped with enhanced security devices, and building leaders are trained in safety protocols.
White Plains Public Safety Commissioner David Chong says the district will have heavy police visibility in and around schools, similar to major holidays.
Clarkstown police in Rockland County are increasing patrols around houses of worship, Catholic churches, and schools.
One Yonkers parent says she's still fearful despite the added measures, telling News 12, "We're going to continue to hold our hands in prayer and really be fearful as parents, grandparents, nieces, aunts, whatever when we send our children to school."
Police say their goal is to make sure students get to and from school safely every day.
