Hundreds of kids at the Yonkers Public School District are not in school yet because of enrollment delays.
The district says there are 337 students registered now and awaiting placement and another 400 applications submitted online after Aug. 1.
“It is frustrating, very, very much frustrating,” Victoria Bennett, a parent at the enrollment center, said.
Bennett said she has tried multiple times to get her daughter registered and placed in a kindergarten classroom. She said she waited at the enrollment center for 15 minutes on Tuesday but had to wait for over an hour and a half last week. She said she’s been there three times since the school year started.
“My daughter is still waiting to be placed in school. She’s in pre-K and hopefully, this is the last step and she’ll be in school soon,” she said. “I’m supposed to be going to work and I’m down here trying to get my daughter in school, so I don’t miss work.”
Jennifer Fuller is another parent who experienced the same. She said although this has been resolved for her, she’s frustrated that her daughter missed three days of school.
In a statement, the district said its team is working to process all pending applications.
“We fully understand the importance of timely resolutions and are committed to ensuring that every application is processed as quickly and efficiently as possible,” the District. “It is crucial for families to provide the necessary paperwork when submitting an application, as many of these applications are from families new to the district.”
