Hundreds of mutual aid workers traveled up to New York to help Con Edison deal with potential damage from the remnants of Debby.

An official from the energy company said they welcomed more than 600 utility workers a part of the operation.

They came in from all parts of the country, including South Carolina, North Carolina, Ohio, Michigan and Indiana. They will help out with any service problems caused by the storm.

They drove their large utility vehicles to SUNY Purchase, where they were briefed about what to expect in the field.

Deanne Ostrowoski, a representative for Con Ed, explained to News 12 on Friday why these extra crews were necessary.

"When a storm of this size impacts our area, there's a chance that there's going to be greater outages. So we supplemented our crews with what we call mutual aid crews. So we bring them in and we set up what we have here at Purchase which is called a staging area. They come here, they get a safety briefing, they get to learn a little bit more as far as our service territory is concerned, they get the equipment that is necessary to put our customers back in lights as safely and as quickly as possible," she said.

Con Ed encourages their customers who experience a power outage to text the word "outage" to 668243.
