Icebreaking operations underway on Hudson River

Ice buildup on the Hudson River has grown severe enough that the U.S. Coast Guard is now actively conducting icebreaking operations to keep traffic moving, including along the river near Bayonne.
The Coast Guard says prolonged bitter cold has led to thick ice that can interfere with daily river use, affecting commerce, winter fuel deliveries and public transportation.
Crews are using multiple vessels during the operations, including two 140-foot Bay Class icebreaking tugboats based in Bayonne, according to the Coast Guard.
Officials say the work is intended to allow those who rely on the river every day, including ferry operators and commercial vessels, to continue operating safely.
Despite the ice conditions, the Coast Guard says all ports within its sector in the area remain open because of the ongoing icebreaking efforts.
