Internal warning system aims to solve siren problems at Indian Point

A new plan is being put in place to solve the recent problems with the emergency warning sirens at Indian Point Nuclear Power Plant.
Last week, the phone lines at the plant were in and out of service three times. The outage prevented the counties from remotely activating the siren system to warn people in the case of an emergency.
Now, Entergy, which owns Indian Point, has promised to create an internal warning system to monitor the phone lines. It will also work with Verizon to subscribe to a service that will monitor the phones lines 24 hours a day and send a technician out at the first sign of a problem.
The emergency services commissioner says Verizon's monitoring system should be in place in about two months.
