Jewish community centers remain on high alert
Jewish community centers in the Hudson Valley and nationwide are on heightened alert today.
Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D) has ordered state police to join the FBI and local police to investigate bomb threats at the JCC of Mid-Westchester in Scarsdale and the JCC on the Hudson in Tarrytown on Monday.
Both community centers, which have nursery schools, were evacuated. Police spent several hours searching the grounds and buildings at the two locations. Nothing was found and everyone was allowed back in. "You have to evacuate because we pray that they're not hoaxes, but you can't take the chance that one of them is not going to be," says Joan Glazer, of Tarrytown. "It's an attempt to make people unsettled and fearful and we're not going to let us defeat us," says JCC of Mid-Westchester Executive Director Karen Kolodny.
Parents say there is understandably some uneasiness in bringing their children back today, but police are on site and they say that helps. "The response has been extremely good by the police in Tarrytown and the staff at the JCC and we have to persevere and not be intimidated by this," JCC Member Alan Surchin.
No group or person has claimed responsibility for any of the threats.
