Yonkers Mayor Mike Spano received a major win in court in his push to seek an unprecedented fourth term.

A state Supreme Court judge ruled against a lawsuit brought by a dozen city residents against the mayor and City Council.

The judge ruled the Council did not violate the city's code of ethics when it voted late last year to allow elected officials to serve four, four-year terms.

The vote to extend term limits has been the focus of heated debate during public hearings before the Council.

The lawsuit also pushed for a referendum on the issue.

The judge ruled that while voters have twice voted on term limits, there's no requirement that the referendum process should be applied to future term limit changes.

Spano says he is pleased with the court ruling.
