Kwanzaa celebrations begin: Hudson Valley celebrates African heritage, culture, and unity

Today marks the first day of Kwanzaa, a weeklong celebration honoring African heritage, culture, and unity.
Created in 1966, Kwanzaa is centered around seven principles, known as the Nguzo Saba, which are highlighted by the lighting of seven candles each night.
The Mount Vernon community will be celebrating Kwanzaa today at the Doles Center at 5 p.m.
Additionally, the Newburgh Free Library is hosting a Kwanzaa celebration on Saturday, with registration available on their website.
